Body by Belanger Blog: My Spartan Race Journey and the Challenge of Obstacle Racing

Over the past few years, I’ve pushed my mental and physical limits by completing over 15 Spartan races. Each race has tested me in ways I could never have anticipated, with distances ranging from the Sprint (5K) to the Super (10K), Beast (21K), and the ultimate Ultra (50K). Each distance brought unique challenges, from the intensity of the obstacles to the ruggedness of the terrain and unpredictability of the weather. And yet, every time I crossed a finish line, I was left with a stronger sense of resilience and an even deeper hunger to continue.

In Spartan races, the obstacles are a defining feature, pushing participants beyond running to test their strength, balance, and grit. Some of the most iconic Spartan obstacles include the rope climb, spear throw, and monkey bars. Each obstacle serves a purpose: challenging different muscle groups, forcing you to pause and strategize, or simply testing your willpower when you’re already exhausted from the trail. Let’s break down a few of these challenges.

The Iconic Obstacles: Strength Meets Strategy

  • Rope Climb: A classic Spartan obstacle that requires upper body and grip strength, the rope climb challenges racers to pull themselves up a rope, often coated in mud and water. Failing this obstacle results in the famous Spartan penalty — 30 burpees!
  • Spear Throw: Unique to Spartan races, the spear throw requires focus and precision. It seems straightforward but hitting a small target after miles of running and obstacles is a challenge, especially if your shoulders are fatigued.
  • Monkey Bars and Twister: These grip-intensive obstacles involve crossing a set of bars or rotating handholds, where a strong core and steady grip are essential. They’re especially challenging on longer courses where your hands and muscles are already taxed.
  • Sandbag Carry and Bucket Brigade: In these obstacles, racers carry a heavy sandbag or a bucket full of gravel up a steep hill. This is a real test of endurance and leg strength and tends to separate the mentally tough from the rest.
  • Barbed Wire Crawl: As if the other obstacles weren’t tough enough, the barbed wire crawl adds a mental challenge. Racers must crawl under low-hanging barbed wire, often through mud, forcing them to stay low and keep moving forward.

In the shorter races, like the 5K Sprint, obstacles can serve as a momentary break from the running. While they’re still tough, the high energy from the crowd and shorter distance keep you moving. In the longer races — the Beast and Ultra — the obstacles become much more grueling. They require you to dig deep and muster strength when your body feels like it has nothing left.

The Most Memorable Races

When looking back at all the races I’ve completed, three stand out as the toughest:

  1. Super (10K) at Palmerton: Known for its intense elevation changes and steep slopes, Palmerton pushed my limits with its grueling climbs and technical terrain. The combination of obstacles and elevation made it a race I won’t forget.
  2. Beast (21K) at Killington: Known as one of the hardest Spartan races in the U.S., the Killington Beast offers extreme terrain and elevation gains. The mountain itself tests your endurance, but add in Spartan obstacles, and you’re in for a brutal, rewarding experience.
  3. Ultra (50K) at Mountain Creek: Completing the Ultra distance twice at Mountain Creek was a huge personal accomplishment. The first time, the race was cold, wet, and windy, adding an extra level of difficulty. The second time, warmer weather offered relief but introduced new challenges with hydration and energy management.

The Addiction to Spartan Races and the Next Chapter

The sense of accomplishment I feel after each race is indescribable, and it’s what keeps me coming back. Spartan races have a way of drawing you in; they’re addictive because they test you in ways most events don’t. Completing a Spartan race is a badge of honor, a testament to resilience and a relentless pursuit of self-improvement.

As I look ahead, I’m faced with the question: Do I keep pushing myself through Spartan races, or is it time to chase new challenges? The idea of an Ironman or a long-distance ultramarathon is calling to me, and while Spartan races have taught me so much, the thought of going even further is enticing. Whatever the path, my journey with Body by Belanger will continue, and I’m ready to tackle whatever comes next with the same dedication, resilience, and grit that Spartan races have instilled in me.
